Dhaka Tribune is the newest, national English language daily. Their vision to be a “New Voice for a Changing Bangladesh” included having the most robust and exciting website in the country. Dhaka Tribune wanted to incorporate the latest technologies and the most efficient content management system so that the news could be delivered to you through the site or social media onto your computer, tablet or mobile devices. This site was built in the newsroom and is only newspaper in Bangladesh to go digital first and print later.
DhakaTribune needed a software to manage all their news flow through one integrated system. We wanted to provide a robust CMS to manage tiered levels of permissions for news flow seamlessly through the newsroom. A key factor on this project was scalability as newsrooms only get larger.
Bangladesh’s first responsive news site, and to the best of our knowledge,in South East Asia.
A complete solution for a paperless office was developed..Revision control for articles, approval system for articles in the workflow between journalists, section editors and editors.
What else did we do? – Web strategy, design, analytics, social media, online marketing, mobile application, server setup, CDN and much more
Over 35 different iterations of the DhakaTribune Homepage was created. This process took over 3-4 months. The homepage on a newspaper site is the most visited page of the organization. It is a very key page since we had to take a lot of things into consideration
An article page is one of the most important pages on a newspaper. Creating a dynamic page with sharing options, comments and yet responsive was a challenge at the time it was built.
The section pages for DhakaTribune were also vital as each departments homepage is their own sections. The business desk owns their own business page on the newspaper. We wanted to keep the feel of the website consistent so that when people navigate between section pages that they feel they are on the same site. We also created a feature and list based view so users can quickly see the latest articles.
News is a very demanding product. Sometimes there may be 500 requests per second and sometimes over 2000+ requests per second during any breaking news or viral stories. Hosting can get quite costly in terms of large scale deployments. We have been able to leverage a combination of technologies to be able to provide high availability hosting with lower expenses without compromising quality and speed. DhakaTribune is server through over 20+ web servers located around the planet. This speeds up page serving by over 400% since the servers are geographically closer to the end users in their locations
Security is a major concern for a newspaper, news sites are commonly targeted by hackers. We have set up several technologies to prevent DDOS attacks, VPN based access for the CMS. A lot of other security protocol’s have also been put in place to make it one of the most secure online newspapers in Bangladesh.
DhakaTribune is also using leading caching technology such as Varnish, Memcache, Authcache and more to keep the site running fast and smooth. The site is also leveraging other technologies such as AJAX to reduce the # of requests and save bandwidth in terms of the navigation bar. Lazy Load is also a contributor in saving image bandwidth and making lighter pages. A major challenge is the homepage of the site as it is the most viewed page on the site. We have been successfully able to optimize it to reduce the page from 2.3MB to 1.2-1.5MB.
Alongside the launch of the newspaper, we were fully engaged to build Dhaka Tribune’s Social Media and Online Marketing strategy. We trained and developed a social media team for Dhaka Tribune and have successfully crossed the Daily Star in every statistic in less than 3 months. We also helped create a launch buzz and hype with a countdown that helped the Tribune come out with a bang!
